I have a 5-year-old and 3-year-old who want to crochet when I crochet, but I can't seem to even begin to teach them how. Does anyone have any good tips about teaching young children to crochet?

For those of you who learned to crochet as children, what age were you? Is there anything particular you remember about the experience?

At that age, they love to make chains. When I was 9 I loved the mesh stitch - dc, ch 2, dc, ch 2, etc - because it covered a lot of ground quickly.

My Mom taught me to crochet by using my fingers to crochet long chains of thread..I was about 7 or 8.. I would finger crochet a long long chain rip it out and do it all over again. Good start lol since the chain stitch is usually the foundation of the item being made. Of course yarn is much easier to handle then crochet thread is ...

Good luck-- that is great they want to be crafty at such a early age..

I learned how to crochet when I was seven. All I did was chain : ) I never stuck with it for long, I didn't have the ability to sit still long enough. I picked it up again as an adult.

I have two step-daughters who I have taught to crochet. I taught them at ages 8 and 10. The 8 year old make the worlds longest chains : ) The ten year old caught on much quicker. They are now 10 and 12. The ten year old has moved beyond the forever long chain and is making scarves. The 12 year old is doing great making scarves and potholders and such. They both stick with the single crochet. They don't do it all the time, they get interested in it again in spurts. The 12 year old is definately ready to learn some new stitches.

Ages 3 and 5 seems so young, but I wouldn't discourage them. I recommend trying to show them the good old chain!! Buy a skein of Red Heart Cheap and let them see if they can make a chain that reaches across the house like my step-daughter did!!!!
