You can take a piece of graph paper and color each square to design the pattern you want in the tie. When you start the project you will use all sc (single crochet) stithes. To change colors is as follows: the stitch before you change leave the 2 loops on your hook add the new color on the hook then yarn over and pull through all three loops. You will then drop the old color and pick up the new color and continue on.

This technique if unlimited. I took a picture of my dog and created a afghan from the pic. Of course I finished the picture portion but not the surrounding rows of he afghan yet.
