I'm a novice knitter who wants to branch out and become a novice crocheter too. For Christmas, I knit some market bags and used a crochet hook to sew up the sides. Now I'd love to make an actual project using just the crochet hook. Any suggestions on what a good first project would be? I'd love something slightly more interesting than just a scarf, but not sure what may be super easy but not a scarf! Thanks for your input!

Hi!

Dish or face cloths, hot pads, more market bags, or hats are a good start. So are fingerless mitts, slippers, or place mats, but you have to make two or more of each item.

http://www.crochetpatterncentral.com/index.php has a vast collection of free patterns, some good, some questionable but definitely worth a look.

I'd say look into the pattern section here, but they are included in the Crochet Pattern Central site.

Have fun.

Pauline

PS - There is a Knitting Pattern Central site, too.

Hello JuliKay2u!

pauline3 is right that hats are an excellent first project. You might also try a poncho, or a shawl. And crochetpatterncentral is the best place I've found for free patterns. (even I can read them.) and I just started trying to read patterns about 3 months ago.

I agree with the pp, my choice is a hat since it is great for winter and usually pretty quick. Welcome too!

For my first project I've selected a Beret hat.

so i think a hat is a good start.

PersonJuliKay2u there are many things in crochet for a novice that you would love once you start.  I found when I started some 40 yrs ago that a simple placemat, or baby blanket is a good start.  You can chain however long you want either and then take any crochet stitch and crochet up a nice baby blanket or small lap blanket, scarf, then go on to something a little more envolved.  PurpleKittyYarns.com  has a list of stitches you can do with the visual picture showing you what it looks like.  It will even tell you what size needle's there are and also give you a conversion list, because there are different needles from different countries using the same number or letter; but not necessarilly have the same stitch pattern length.  (That simply means that however many inches it is after you have crochet so many stitches).  They also give free patterns that are really nice.  Good luck and don't get discouraged if it seems hard at first - it isn't.

I am a lefty, and talk about learning to crochet!  My sister is right handed, so when she started to teach me she couldn't figure out how to get me started, but I just reversed everything and found it worked!!  So don't give up.  Happy Crocheting!
