Types of Hooks

All the hooks I have are aluminum except for two that are plastic. I love my hooks, of course, but I was thinking of venturing out into some of the decorative wood or wild colored acrylic hooks. Does anyone have any suggestions? Even warnings of bad experiences are welcome. I don't follow patterns or guages. I just pick one based on what I'm making and what kind of yarn I'm using so I'm not so much concerned if they don't come in exact sizings. Also, any input on certain types of yarn that do or don't work well with certain types of hooks...really any input would be awesome! Thank you, now back to the grind! ;)

Hi Jen!!!

I also use differnt types of hooks depending on my yarns. I have aluminum, plastic & one bamboo hook which I just bought. Since you've used both aluminim & plastics I don't think I have to tell you about them so we'll move onto my bamboo hook. Ok, the feel is wonderful. It's very lightweight & a breeze to use. I'm only in the practicing stage with it at the moment, but I would definately buy more!! I'm crocheting some acrylic with it right now & this seems to be fine. I probably wouldn't use it with a super soft yarn like bamboo. I haven't ever really had any bad experiences with any of my hooks which I believe are mostly the Susan Bates hooks. My bamboo hook is by Clover & I had to buy it in a yarn shop. Hope this helps a bit.

Happy stitching!!

Hi, I only use surina wood crochet hooks. I love them. I have arthritis and aluminum hooks pull the heat from your hands, whereas the wooden ones keep the heat in.

Thanks for the feedback! I've seen alot more bamboo hooks around and a few other types of wood ones on ebay. That is really interesting about the wood hooks not pulling the heat from your hands, definitely something to remember, thanks again!

Hey, Jen:

If you go for wooden hooks, rub wax paper on them, it'll make them go smoother, with not as many snags.

Hi Jen, I have used bamboo also. I love them, they are light and are much easier on your hands, especially when you are using the bigger hooks. I have a friend that has a set of rosewood hooks and she really likes them.

I have a set of bamboo hooks that I bought from eBay - I rarely use my plastic or metal hooks as I find the bamboo ones so light and easy. Not sure about snags, as I've never had a problem even with very fine yarns - maybe not all wooden hooks are finished properly.
