How do you hold your hook and work?

Call me crazy... but I've been looking at video tutorials on youtube, and have a good deal of trouble following them because it looks like "they're doing it wronnng."

(Most of my friends knit and are confuddled by crochet, so I haven't seen someone else crochet in real life since I was about 5.)

It seems they are holding the hook like one would hold a pencil to draw--fingers out much like on a violin's bow--and the worked part with two fingers in the left hand.

For most projects, I hold the hook in my right hand in almost a fist, similar to how a drumstick is held, and hold the working piece toward the hook, pressing a finger against the loop to help it open for the hook.

While I'm working on this blanket and it's gotten too large for that (the width won't fit in my hand anymore), I lie the piece on my lap and work the hook into it with my hand simply holding the not-yet-blanket in place on my leg.

Am I just weird?

I guess I'm one of those that would hold it more like a violin bow. :o) I've only seen a few people work with the hook like a pencil, and it always looks wrong to me. I don't think, though, that there is only one way of doing it.

And as for being weird, weird depends on your perspective.

:o)

Well I guess I'm weird too, because it sounds like I hold my hook like that also. I just can't get the hang of it the way the tutorials show. Yet, I taught my daughter to crochet and she holds the hook just like the tutorials.

I hold my crochet hook, like a pen, in my left hand. I don't know any other way of holding it! It works for me and I am very happy crocheting this way.

I hold my hook like a pencil too. Am I weird, I don't think so. It's what you're comfortable in, on how you hold the hook. For me, I tried to hold it in my fist grabbing the hook, but I can't. It doesn't feel right. Some people write like that and it looks so unnatural and hard to control the pen that way. Whatever feels good to you and you're getting the results you want, then hold the hook which ever way you want to.

Hah! I hold it exactly the same way you do. I was starting to wonder if I was the only one, too! Glad we're not alone.

I hold it with my "fist" also. I've tried to do it the other way & can't get the hang of it.

Just the way my Grandma taught me I guess.

I hold my hook both ways - but only when I am crocheting a lot over a long period. I start out holding it like I am holding a knife to cut, when my hand starts cramping, I switch to holding it like a pencil. It took a little time to be quick holding it like a pencil, I learned the other way, but by learning to hold both ways, you can crochet longer when your hand starts cramping.

Happy Crafting!

I hold either way. Like a dinner fork, is easier on your hand, fingers. And your thumb.

DanaLorz, I do the exactly the same thing as you. I taught myself holding the hook like a knife (or in a fist like most other people here lol) and when I'm working on something that I don't want to stop yet my hand starts to cramp up I switch to "pencil hold".
