Does anybody have a pattern for a quick afghan or throw that doesn't look like the same old afghans you see in the Leisure Arts pamphlets? I want to make an apartment warming gift for a hip twenty something friend of mine who just moved to Hollywood.

I am thinking of making a throw/afghan using Tunisian crochet. The simple stitch looks good with color changes or if the yarn has color changes itself. However, you need a very long Tunisian hook - those I've seen which are bigger than US 15/10 mm are quite expensive (made of wood)!

Maybe even handwashable yarns can be washed in the machine crocheted the Tunisian way; but in any case try this with a swatch first.

The 5 1/2 Hour Throw:

It's really easy and fast and looks nice. Pick a fun color, or maybe 2 or 3 colors.

I like the looks of the lap throw from www.redheart.com as it is a little smaller than the afghan you have to have an entire couch to display, and it would take one of those super huge skeins of redheart and probably could be done in a few nights. It uses front and back post double crochet for some cool texture. I printed the pattern off the website for free.
