I am new to this site and sent a question under general discussion, that I think should have been in this forum.

I recently came across a pattern for a beach bag using jute twine. Does anyone know of a yarn of the same weight that I could substitue for the jute? Would a cotton yarn be too thin?

I don't know jute twine, but I've used a loose hemp twine to make cat toys. If it's similar, then it's about the same size as "medium" weight worsted acrylic, if you ignore the frayed bits coming off.
