Rivka's earflap hat

Three ear flap hats down 2 more to go!

This one is being modeled by my one year old daughter. I got it finished just in time for her birthday.

Here's the link for the pattern

The only thing I changed about the pattern is obviously there are no scrap tweeds in it and I always add two extra rows at the bottom before doing the flaps. Size changes are easy by simply changing hook size, no need to increase the rows. This one was done with a size 6.5mm hook and fits a 1 to 2 year old. I made two for newborns using a size 5mm hook. Once you get going the pattern is easy to remember (that's why I always make them in batches) and I can finish one in about an hour. These make the ultimate gift for kids!

Here are the newborn ones I did for my two friend who both had boys 2 weeks apart.

So cute, both the hat and the model.

I love your hats!!!! Making hats into gifts is my favorite crocheting project. I have only attempted ear flaps a few times however. I can never get them quite were I want on the head, the right size or the tassels correct. Can you give me some suggestions on how you approach it all. Thanks. I also just love the fuzzies on you daughters hat, she's so cute!!!

Thanks for the compliment. I also had tried several patterns that never worked out and when I found this one it opened the world of ear flaps for me;-)

One thing I always do and it helps prevent screw ups is to count my stitches at the end of each increase row just to make sure I'm where I need to be, making them with the strips also helps because you can easily count rows. As far as the flaps; this pattern has an end total of 40 stitches and each flap has 10 stitches, together totaling 20 leaving 20 spaces so she says in the pattern to do one flap then count 11 spaces and do the other. The 11 spaces will be the front and the 9 left over will be the back. If you want a larger front then just count over 12 or what ever you want.

Also if you are making larger sizes ( I use a size 7mm or 8mm for adult medium) you may need to use either very thick yarn or two strands held together throughout (what I usually do)unless you want a very "open work" hat.

With my daughter's hat I used an eyelash yarn for the last single crochet around the hat. It added the perfect finishing touch.

There's a lot of room for creativity with these.

I hope this helped. Try one and let me know how it worked for you.

Thanks so much for your awesome tricks for making this hat. I'm definitely going to test the pattern out when I start making my Christmas presents. I'll be sure to let you know how they turn out. Thanks again!!!

I have tried several times to go to that link, it just tells me the link is wrong.  This hat is exactly what i am looking for for my 1 year old granddaughter.  Is there another way to get the pattern?

Yarncat.com is no longer a good site.  Would you please email me the pattern?

My email is mscallie@cox.net.

Thank you,

This is not the same pattern, but it's similar and super simple:
