Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

My mom's birthday is coming up December 18th. I wanted to do something different. I've been looking those crochet cakes, you know, the ones at:

http://www.normalynn.info/

If you haven't had a chance, bop on over and have a look. There's a generous helping of free patterns to try. Anyway, I decided to try my hand at one, for a calorie-free treat:) So here it is:

B'day Cake

It's not perfect, but I think she'll get a kick out of it! She was born in 1925, and I'm sure in all that time, she's never got a cake like this :)

I used Sugar'n Cream Soft Ecru for the cake, and Warm Brown for the chocolate icing. The cherries were done in a bit of Red Heart SS worsted weight red, all using an E4 hook.

If you're looking for something really different, give one a whirl!

Thanks everyone:)

That's the great thing a crochet cake: no worries about the diet!

Btw, I had a slight problem with getting the top of the cake to lie flat, so I cut out a cardboard disk that fit the inside circumference and pressed it into the top before stuffing. That ironed things out just fine.

I wonder if that would work when the frosting doesn't stick properly....

It may help actually, since it gives the top a little more support and firmness from the inside. I just used Tacky Glue to attach the frosting, whipped cream and cherries.

Oooh I had better add that to my bookmarked sites :)

More inspiration and ideas, thank you, a cake I can look at and not gain any weight from.
