I started this on my trip up to Vermont to visit my parents this weekend. I plan to make a brim to keep out the sun. It is a variation on one of my favorite old (1917) doily patterns - the plate doily.

Looking good. I anticipate it's appearance as an FO.

I LOVE this!! Especially since you used an old doily pattern. Ingenious!! What else have you created with old patterns?

I am trying to make this hat for myself and just cannot make it work. I am fine until Row 5, which says (sc in next 3 sc, ch2) repeat around. Following these directions from this point through Row 8 I have wound up with a lot of ruffels. Since failing with this pattern so miserably I have searched for other thread crochet hats and found none. I am going to Mexico in the middle of April and it is very hot there then. I've recently had medical treatments that made a lot of my hair fall out. So, I need a hat to keep the sun off my punkin and yet not be hot. I also need it to be scrunchable for packing and carrying around. Your help will be most greatly appreciated. Thank you, Susan in Jax

Hi Susan, I sure hope I can help here. I just added a note in the pattern to make it clearer, I hope! Maybe you are putting sc's in the chain loops too? Skip the chain loops. Only sc in the sc's. This would explain the ruffles - too many stitches. Please don't hesitate to ask more questions. I am new at pattern writing, so your questions are very helpful for me.
