I'm in search of crochet design software.  I've googled (and googled and googled) and haven't found what I'm looking for.  Think patterns in Robyn Chachula books and old Magic Crochet magazines.  I want software that will let me create a visual pattern. Obviously it exists because I've seen it...but where do I find it for personal use??

I've asked this exact question earlier. It turns out that the only software I've found is for circular crochet, which doesn't help me when I design linearly. I know you can purchase a font set that is crochet symbols, but I haven't taken that step yet. I've also heard that you can create your own symbols in a drawing program, but then have to cut and paste which would be very time consuming and probably very frustrating.

Sure wish someone would create a program we could use, though. I'm designing now and would love to include diagrams as well as written instructions.

Hey, thanks!  That's really helpful.  Can you share the site where you found the software for circular crochet?  I would like to take a look at it.  And I will definitely check out the font.  That hadn't occurred to me, but may come in handy.

Yeah a program like that would definitely be nice.

Okay, here is what I've found online:

SBFILET.TTF — $4.99

Now you can design your own Filet Crochet Patterns using standard word processing or graphics software and SBFilet.ttf — the first and only True Type Font specifically for Filet Crochet. This font was created by SBCrochet specifically for crocheters.

The circular crochet software is New Hampshire Software's SymblCro and it's a FREE download.

I have the Symbol Crochet by New Hampshire Software, but it is only for circular motifs.

HTH.

Super, I'll check out the Symbol Crochet.

I found the font and downloaded it for $3- the StitchinCrochet font.  FYI- she has tutorials on youtube, but they show you how to use the fonts/symbols to create pattern diagrams using Adobe Illustrator.  I saw something about using Open Office instead, but haven't tried it myself.

please tell me where I can find the crochet design program that can design in cirles like doilies, I am really tired ( and frustrated) with doing them by hand. Teresa  (yarnmiss@gmail.com)  I did find quite a few programs that design linearly.

What programs did you find that design linearly? That's what I need. I found Symbol Crochet as a free download, but it only designs in circles, which doesn't help me.

See if this site is what you are looking for...it's not free but it does do designs other than circles:

http://www.crochetdesigns.com/software/default.htm

www.pcstitch.com has graphing software...it's supposed to be for cross-stitch, but I use it for crochet graphing.

On this site: http://www.microrevolt.org/knitPro/ You can upload a photo and it will overlay a graph on it and you can print it out or save it to your computer. It's free!

I have used Knitwear software. The patterns are pretty simple and they can be used either for knitting or for crochet.

Here is where you will find more information on it:

Hi,

I stumbled upon this thread in Google and thought I'd resurrect it, and put in a shameless plug for my software, Crochet Charts. ;-)  It's specifically for Crochet and you can use it to create free form symbol crochet designs of any size.

A few quick points:

  • Windows, Mac, and Linux
  • You can export your charts as PDF, SVG, jpeg, png, tiff, bmp
  • Customizable stitch library including 109 stitches and symbols
  • Easily design in rows or rounds
  • and much more

On the website you can view screenshots, demo videos, and download a limited trial version.

If you have any questions, or comments please let me know. I'm always happy to have feedback and answer questions.

Thanks for your time,

Those links for the SBFILET.TTF are no longer working. I did find it here however for anyone that is interested:

There are many Counted Cross Stitch software programs out there that work well. I have "Wild Stitches" for crochet but I don't think it is in production any more. There are also crochet  fonts you can get with the new crochet symbols that work in office. I like them especially in my "Office Excel" because you can center the symbols within the square, or grid and shrink the grid to fit the font size you are using. It takes a little to adjust to doing it that way but until something comes along,...

You also have to worry about the new computers and or software and what will work with whatever system  you have. Good idea to use the demo when offered.

Like you, I am still watching for the program for crochet design that will take my breath away. I would love to see one that gives virtual images of the design.

I would like to use it for afghans and crochet lace.

Found this program...cost $44.00 but contains over 200 stitches and writes the pattern as you make the chart! Haven't bought it, but it sure is tempting.

Intwined Pattern Studio is fun, powerful software for knitting, lace, crochet, and weaving pattern design. This program offers:

  • Create a complete pattern to print, sell, or share as a PDF, or export as your favorite image format (print or export a PDF file with any image-size and resolution)
  • You can create your own custom stitches and stitch icons
  • As you "paint" your chart, Intwined creates the written instructions, for in-the-round or flat knitting styles
  • If you prefer to type or paste your pattern instructions, Intwined creates the graphic of the chart as you type
  • Create magazine-cover-quality graphics, because Intwined uses SVG, so your designs never look like pixels
  • The built-in stitch library includes over 200 stitches, cables, and symbols
