What material is best used when making a scarf? I want one that's not too heavy and too thick yet still gives the one wearing it a warm felling. And what color you think is neutral other than black and white?

Hope you guys can help me. Thanks!

With narrow scarves being so popular, I love using sock yarn because the scarf is almost weightless when complete and the varigated colors are fantastic.  I like using varigated yarn because it gives "pop" to the scarf without having to do intricate pattern stitches.  However, if the stitch pattern is the focus of your pattern, I would choose a solid color.  If you don't want a thick or heavy scarf, select a more open weave pattern or choose a finer yarn (#3 or less).  As far as other neutral colors, browns, tans, creams, grays, or varigated in these color ranges would work.

I second the motion to sock yarn. It's really convenient to use. Sure you'll love it.

Alpaca yarn is light but very warm. Since I'm allergic to wool, I use a lot of alpaca and really love it. I also like a merino/silk blend DK weight that I get at my LYS.

I don't like bamboo unless it is blended with wool because it stretches so much.

I don't do neutrals very much, but grey is my neutral of choice. If I'm making a scarf for someone who tends to wear warmer colors, I'll stick to the brown/tan neutrals.

I love Caron's Simply Soft.  It is lightweight, feels silky and soft and washes up beautifully in the washer and dryer.  You can use H,I,J,K hooks with this yarn.

Happy Hooking.

I agree with what others have suggested.  I like a lot of the MadelineTosh Light colors.  The texture is a little interesting and I love working with it.  I've also used Colinette Jitterbug in the color "bright charcoal" a few times.  I get compliments on my own scarf and I've made a few for others.  It has variegated coloring, but not too loud.  I wear that scarf when I need to pull in an odd color into my outfit.  Works every time.  These are just my two favorites - I like working with them and how they wear.

Expensive yarn that youre just dying to have, it generally only takes 1 skein per scarf
