Help, pleae re substituting yarn

I have a pattern that calls for #4 wool, but just saw some lovely SOFT yarn in #2. Could I substitute the #2 yarn if I use two strands at a time?

I would appreciate any advice.

You may be able to use two strands for your project. What I would suggest  is to do a guage swatch with the two strands to see how it looks. If you are satisfied, then it will be fine.
