    BTW, a paperclip or bobby pin makes a pretty good stitch marker. I'd have to see the pattern instructions as well but as the previous poster pointed out, the beginning instruction to make a ring shouldn't be confused with crocheting in a spiral. You should have placed a marker in the first stitch...
