Easiest Shawl Ever

Introduction

shawlThis was a one-day project for designer Kika. (Hint. It can be a one-day project for you, too.) She couldn't find a pattern for a triangle shawl that she liked, so she took matters into her own hands. Don't you want to take this matter into your own hands, too? Hook on.

Materials List

  • Two balls of Luxury Mohair by King Cole (202m/220yds, total), colour Valencia.
  • A big fat plastic hook, size Q (16mm).

The Pattern

I did the entire thing with sc in the front loop only, but I am pretty sure it would work for any stitch you like.

Make a chain as long as you want the shoulder part to be. I made a chain that is about 66" (168cm) long.

Starting in the second ch from hook * decrease in the first two stitches at the beginning of the row, sc across, decrease in the last two stitches, ch 1, turn. Repeat from * until you've run out of stitches (at the point of the triangle).

This one ended up being 66" (168cm) long by 32" (81cm) wide at the bottom point. There was enough yarn left over to make two hefty tassels which I love.

Abbreviations:
ch = chain
sc = single crochet

Leave it to me to mess up a simple pattern!! I live in Scotland, but travelled to St. Louis last week to visit my family. I was really looking forward to trying to make this shawl. I went immediately to Walmart, could not get to Hobby Lobby, and bought yarn. The pattern does not say to use the two balls of yarn together, but that is what I did since the hook was so big. I ended up with a shoulder warmer! So what did I do wrong? OK, I did not use the type of yarn specified because I did not have time to find it. But I was surprised that it turned out wrong anyway.

Any advice would be much appreciated. I am back in Scotland now though and the yarn here is so different!
( I always buy a supply of yarn when I go home!)

I really want to try this one again.

This is a great basic pattern that you can change slightly by adding fringe or a scalloped border. Or changing colors for stripes. Lots of possibilities.

Thanks!

Patrice, I haven't made this, although I plan to. I am certain that it means crochet with only one strand at a time. Any pattern that calls for using 2 or more strands at once will always say that.

If you aren't thrilled about the shoulder shrug, consider unraveling it and make=ing this againg, using one strand at a time.

I didn't know yarn differed that much from country to country. Just never thought about it.

Best wishes on it.

HI Kathy
I had decided to unravel it, never had to do that before, but the yarn is really pretty! My mistake to use two strands. It made sense to me! OH well.

Yes, yarn is very different here. It is something you would never think about unless you were in a different country! They do alot of knitting in Scotland, not much crochet. But one time I went into a wool shop and was looking for a Q hook. I had seen a pattern for one. They were amazed, nothing bigger than a K and those were hard to find. The salesclerk looked really confused and asked what type of yarn you would use a hook like that for! They don't have chunky, or that lovely soft yarn, or even varigated colors. It is very frustrating when you are used to walking into Walmart or Hobby Lobby and having a banquet of choice!!

I will try the shawl again, thanks!

I am a beginner at crochet. I also hate having to constantly look at patterns while I'm crocheting. I used your decrease idea to make a shawl but I believe I used an N hook, chained 116, started with about 8 rows of single crochet without decreasing, changed the color, then started half double crochet and began decreasing one stitch at the beginning and end of each row. The front comes down to almost mid-thigh and the point at the back comes to the bend of my knees. (I'm 5'2".) I was making it for myself but my 13 year old daughter liked it so much I gave it to her and am starting another one for myself. Thanks for that decrease idea. Makes it very fast and easy.
