Crocheted petal pattern panels and knitted garter panels combine in this  easy vest. The garter stitch provides great elasticity without shaping while the petal pattern provides sophistication.

Finished Size: 27 (31, 35, 39, 43)" bust circumference. Garment shown measures 31", modeled with 1" negative ease.
Yarn: Schoppel Wolle Cashmere Queen (45% merino, 35% cashmere, 20% silk; 153 yd [140 m]/1¾ oz [50 g]): naturbraun alpakabraun (gray), 3 (4, 4, 5, 5) balls. Yarn distributed by Skacel.
Hook: Size G/6 (4 mm). Adjust hook size if necessary to obtain correct gauge.
Needles: Size 6 (4 mm). Adjust needle size if necessary to obtain correct gauge.
Notions: Yarn needle.
Gauge: 24 sts = 5¼" in sc; height of first crocheted panel = 2"; 18 sts and 38 rows = 4" in garter st.

It's lovely, but I do not knit at all--it causes pain due to old injuries, and crochet does not. What would be a good substitute crochet stitch for the panels?
