This is exactly the pattern I've been searching for! I have medium experience with crocheting and for some reason can't make this pattern work! It's embarrassing since it's supposed to be "easy". I'm also confused by the terminology of "bottom ridge lp"  and "blo". I've searched on line, but haven't had satisfactory results. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

lp is short for 'loop'

blo is 'back loop only'

I know that lp means loop so that one stitch involves "bottom ridge loop" and one "back loop only". I haven't found illustrations for "bottom ridge loop". The directions are just not at all what I'm used to . I've made much more complicated garments, but using a different type of notation.

I'm really desperate to make this hat for a number of people. It's the perfect hat for guys as the name says. Any tutorials people could reference for me would be great!

I believe that "bottom ridge lp" refers to the foundation chain.  Work into the bottom loop of the chain instead of the top loop.

This really is the best guy hat ever!  I'm almost finished with my second one, and I'll start the last one today.  They work up pretty quickly.  My husband approved them for gift-giving to our nephews.  That's a pretty big deal because my husband is picky, and doesn't want anything that he deems as too girly.  I used one skein of Berroco VIntage DK yarn for each hat.  It's an acrylic/wool/nylon washable blend.  The 288 yards was more than enough for one hat.  I have leftovers to add to my ever-growing stash!

I was excited about making this hat, too, but once started am finding it very slow and difficult.  I MUST be doing something wrong.  I'm using a DK sport yarn and the 5mm hook as directed in the pattern, but after doing a row of slip stitches they are too tight to easily insert the hook for the next row.  I tried again, making the stitches VERY loose, but still not going easily, so I switched to a 6mm hook and again made the stitches ridiculously loose.  It became a bit easier, but the stitches of the previous row are laid towards the back of the work, so going into the back loop is awkward.  I find it does not go quickly at all.  Not as quick and smooth as normal crochet stitches.  I know I'm doing it correctly because the rows I have done do look like the pictures (they look a lot like knit rows, don't they?), but this is not turning out to be as fun as I thought it would.  If you have any tips, I would sure appreciate it.  At this rate it will take me til NEXT Christmas to make one.

After my last comment, I've modified my opinion.  At first, it really was too hard, but once I got the hang of making the slip stitches MUCH looser than they are normally meant to be, then it went like a breeze. I love the finished product. My husband LOVED it, too and it is now his favourite hat. But after a few weeks of wearing it daily, I noticed that it is starting to lose it’s elasticity. It no longer bounces back after being stretched, so rather than hug his head it just sits there. I used Red Heart Designer Sport yarn. Maybe it just needs to be washed. I hope so.

I am finding the pattern difficult to follow. I am making the 20" hat. First problem: In row 8, you have to stitch into more stitches than are available in the previous row (single crochet into next 32 stitches - but I have only 30 per the pattern). Then you come to more directions for row 8 for all sizes. Do I do row 8 twice the two different ways? Hope this makes sense. I'm stumped.
