Introduction

The owl variation of my basic double-crochet hat, inspired by the adult and baby knit owl sweaters by Kate Davies (but I can't/don't knit).

There are six owls spaced evenly around the hat, formed by front-post double-crochet stitches.

Some added notes:  my crochet tension is tight... so I use a large hook and only chain 2 to count as a starting dc.  A "typical" crocheter might use a smaller hook, such as an "H" and use a chain 3 to count as the first dc of each row.

I corrected row 9... to be only 1 repeat of row 8 (the "12" repeats were for my "basic" hat pattern).  Thanks for catching that!

Materials List

Worsted weight / weight 4  yarn:  200 yds /180 m (ex. Red Heart Super Saver, Caron Simply Soft, Lions Brand Wool Ease)

Hook H/I/J (5/5.5/6 mm): to gauge (I crochet with high tension so I typically use "J")

12 buttons:  3/16 or 1/4 inch, for "eyes" (I used 3/16 inch white)

Sewing thread and needle (for sewing on eyes)

 

 

 

Finished Size

One size fits most adults

Gauge

1st 4 rounds approx. 4 - 4 1/4 inches (10.5 cm) in diameter

The Pattern

chain 5, join into ring (or make magic ring)
Rnd 1:  ch 2 (1st dc in each rnd), 11 dc, sl into ch-2 dc for join (12 dc)
Rnd 2:  ch 2, dc in 1st dc, [2 dc in next dc] 11x, join (24 dc)
Rnd 3:  ch 2, [dc in next dc, 2 dc in  next] 11x, 2 dc in next dc, join (36 dc)
Rnd 4:  ch 2, [2 dc in next dc, dc in next 2 dc] 11x,  2 dc in next dc, dc, join (48 dc)
Rnd 5:  ch 2, [dc in next 3 dc, 2 dc in next dc] 11x, 3 dc, dc in sl stitch join, join (60 dc)
Rnd 6:  ch 2, dc in next st, [2 dc in next dc, dc in next 4 dc] 12x, 2 dc, join (72 dc)
Rnd 7:  ch 2, dc in next 10 dc [2 dc in next dc, dc in next 11] 5x, 2 dc in final dc, join (78 dc)
Rnd 8:  ch 2, dc in next 77 dc (78 dc)
Rnd 9:  repeat Rnd 8

Rnd 10:  ch 2, 2 dc, [2 FPdc, 4 dc, 2 FPdc, 5 dc] 5x, 2 FPdc, 4 dc, 2 FPdc, 2 dc, join (78 dc)
 Rnd 11:  ch 2, 2 dc, [skip 2 dc, tr in each of next 2 dc, FPtr in each of the skipped sts over previous 2 tr, skip 2, FPtr in each of next 2, tr behind FPtr in each of the 2 skipped sts, 5 dc] 5x, skip 2 dc, tr in each of next 2 dc, FPtr in each of the skipped sts over previous tr, skip 2, FPtr in each of next 2, tr behind previous 2 tr in each of skipped sts, 2 dc, join (78 sts)

Rnd 20:  ch 2, dc in next 77 dc, join (78 dc)
Rnd 21-24 (border):  ch1, sc in each st, join (78 sc in each Rnd)

Sew button eyes on in appropriate locations

This is adorable. I'm wondering why you're only chaining 2 at the end of the row before turning instead of 3? I use 2 for a HDC turning chain and 3 for DC. Thanks,

Sorry - I meant why only a ch. 2 at the beginning of the row after joining instead of a ch. 3 for a DC?

Hi there. New at this reading pattern thing so I have a question. On round 9 it says repeat round 8 12x so does that mean that there will actually be 36 rounds instead of 24? Thanks in advance.

Question, this is a new stich for me.  I have completed the hat up to Rnd 11.  On Rnd 12 it says to FPdc in the

next 8 dc.  I am not sure where the next dc's are?  Are some of the dc's behind some of the prevous stiches?  Can

you send me a picture of what is considered the next 8 dc?
