Promise Necklace

The idea for this crochet necklace woke the designer at 4:30 one morning. The twining crochet chain and the single bead in the focal pendant promise an elegant finish to a simple outfit.

Finished Size:
18 (191/2, 21)" long from button to buttonhole. Medallion measures 3" long and 1 3/8" across.
Yarn:
Aunt Lydia's Classic Crochet Thread size 10 (100% mercerized cotton; 400 yd [365 m]/3 oz [85 g]; CYCA #0): # 0226 natural (A), # 0021 linen (B); 1 ball each. Distributed by Coats & Clark.
Hook Size:
7 (1.65 mm) steel hook. Adjust hook size if necessary to obtain correct gauge.
Notions:
St markers (m); tapestry needle; 3/8" button; 3/8" tear drop bead; needle that will fit through hole on bead; sewing or beading thread to sew bead to necklace.
Gauge:
Medallion Rnds 1-2 = 3" long and 13/8" wide.

This necklace is beautiful!  I have just started it, and I have a question (already.. lol)  Maybe I am reading something wrong, but I don't understand how round 1 ends up with 50 dc.  I'll keep trucking with what I have for now though... I'm sure it will become obvious in a little bit!
