The square repeated throughout this afghan was originally designed differently than what you see here, but a quilter-friend of mine commented that it looked similar to the traditional Snail's Trail or Drunkard's Path quilt-block patterns. With a few minor changes, I was able to create the distinctive spirals of the Snail's Trail using reversible double crochet stitches.

is there a pattern book with this exact pattern in it?  is it the one advertised here?

Janice Kolostow, the pattern is on page 114 of the book called Reversible Color Crochet.  I'm looking forward to making this afghan. - Suzanne
