I did this project for my husband's aluminum canister. I did some searching of different kinds of stitches and decided to use a raised/relief stitch, it is a kind of textured stitch which I believe is good if I want to not just to have a carrier but also protect my DH's aluminum from dent and scratch.
The stitches is adapted from 300 Crochet Stitches, hence used their definition and instructions on how to make the TR/RF stitches. I also posted the diagram from a chinese crochet stitches book to illustrate the instructions. Hope this will clear some of the confusion. Sometimes it helps to have a diagram together with instructions.
Yarn: Scheepjeswol Superwash Zermat or you can use any worsted weight yarn

Definition: Raised relief - inserting the hook around the whole stem of a stitch
TR/RF2tog - treble/raised (relief)
TR/RF - treble/raised (relief)
make an adjustable ring or ch 5 and sl st on the first ch. to form a ring.
rnd 1: make 8 sc
rnd 2: ch 1, sc on the beginning ch, 2 sc on the next st, *sc on the next, 2 sc on the next st*, rep from * to* around, close with sl st.
rnd 3: ch 1, sc on the beginning ch,sc on the next ch, 2 sc on the next st *sc on the next 2 st, 2 sc on the next 2 st* rep from * to * around, close with sl st.
rnd 4 : ch 1, sc on the beginning ch, sc on the next 2 st, make 2 sc on the next st, *sc on the on the next 3 st, 2 sc on the next st.* rep from * to * around, close with sl st.
rnd 5: ch 1, sc on the beginning ch, sc on the next 3 st, make 2 sc on the next st, *make sc on the next 4 st, 2 sc on the beginning ch,* rep from * to * around, close with sl st.
[make multiples of 4+ 3] for my own canister I made 39 ch.
(base row- right side) rnd 1: sc on the 2nd ch from hook. sc all through the row, turn.
rnd 2: ch 3 ( count as 1 dc), sk first st, *dc on the next st, rep * till end, sk turning ch, turn.
rnd 3: ch 1, *make sc on the next 3 st**, tr/rf2tog over the next st. inserting hook round the 2nd sc in last but-one row of the first leg and round the following 4th sc for second leg (skipping 3 sts between), 1 sc on the next st; rep from * ending last rep at ** on top of the turning ch, turn.
rnd 4: rep. rnd 2.
rnd 5: ch 1, 1 sc on the first st, 1tr/rf on the next st. inserting hook around top of first raised cluster of two rows below. *3 sc on the next st,** tr/rf2tog over next st inserting hook round same cluster as last raised st for first leg and round top of the next raised cluster for 2nd leg; rep from * ending last rep at ** when 2 sts remain, make 1 tr/rf over next st inserting hook round top of same cluster as last raised st, 1 sc on top of the turning ch. turn.
rnd 6 : rep. 2nd row.
rnd 7: rep 3rd row, except to make new raised clusters insert hook round previous raised clusters instead of sc.
rep. 4th, 5th, 6th and 7th until you reach your preferred length.
rnd 8-10 make sc all through-out the row, turn.
rnd 11 - ch 6 (first 3 as dc), sk 3 st, dc on the next, (ch 3, sk 3 st, dc on the next)rep and end.
ch as long as you want, then sc on the 2nd ch from hook, and sc entire row, close with sl st, and faster off.
weave the drawstring on the mesh you just made on the body.
Connect the base and body using sc, then proceed to closing the body using sl st, or if you preferred, first close the body using sl st on the wrong side, after completion turn wrong side to right side and stitch the body on the base.
