Introduction

I needed some new facecloths and sat down to search for a pattern. All I came across were 'sampler stitch' type patterns and although functional, they didn't quite float my boat. So I set out to create my own. What I came up with is a simple pattern that can be worked up in an afternoon.

Materials List

Worsted Weight Cotton:
Color A: small amount
Color B: small amount
Color C: 1 ball Sugar ’n Cream, 2.5 oz.
Crochet Hook size H / 5.0mm

Yarn Needle

I used Summer Twist for Color A, Taupe Twist for Color B and Soft Ecru for Color C.

Finished Size

11 1/4" x 11 1/4"

Gauge

Not critical.

The Pattern

With Color A, ch 4, join to first ch to form loop.

Rnd 1: Ch 1, 8 sc in loop. Join to first sc.

Rnd 2: Pull up 1" loop, yo, insert hook in same sc as join and pull up a loop 3 times, yo and pull through all loops on hook, (beg Puff st made), ch 3; * yo, pull up loop 4 times in next sc, ch 3 (Puff st made); repeat from * around ending with sl st in first puff st to join. Finish off, weave in ends.

Rnd 3: with Color B, join with sl st in any ch-3 loop, ch 1, 3 sc in same loop; *in next loop make 3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc; in next loop make 3 sc; repeat from * around ending with 3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc in last loop; join with sl st to first sc.

Rnd 4: Ch 1, *sc in ea st to corner; in corner make 2 sc, ch 2, 2 sc; repeat from * around ending with sl st to first sc. Finish off, weave in ends.

You will now be working in rows.

Row 1: Join Color C in any corner ch-2 space with sl st. Ch 1, sc in same sp; *ch 1, sk next sc, sc in next sc; repeat from * across to corner; sc, ch 1, sc in corner; repeat from * to opposite corner ending with sc in last ch-2 sp. Turn.

Row 2: Sc in first sc and in next ch-1 sp; *ch 1, sc in next sc to corner; sc, ch 1, sc in corner; repeat from * to opposite corner ending with sc in last ch-1 sp and last sc. Turn.

Rows 3-27: Repeat rows 1 and 2.

You will now be working in rounds.

Rnd 28: Repeat row 1, do not turn. Make sc, ch 1, sc in last st; working along side edge and into end of rows, ch 1, sc evenly across to corner of square; in corner make sc, ch 1, sc; working along side edge and into end of rows, ch 1, sc evenly across ending with sc, ch 1 and join to first sc. Do not turn.

Rnd 29: Ch 1, sc in ea sc and ch-1 sp across with sc, ch 1, sc in ea corner. Join to first sc. Finish off, weave in ends.

Enjoy!

I love your pattern!  Thanks so much for sharing it...I can't wait to try making one of these myself!

Looked so goo, tried it immeduatel and find the instructions not clear as they could be.

When you start working in rows, explicit instructions should say to miss the chain 1 space and crochet into the next sc.

As well is there a ch 1 before the corner sets of sc, ch 1, sc. And after?

As well there will not be a ch 2 space when you do your rounds.

Confusing.

@Doreenknits, the directions are correct.  Miss the next sc, sc into ch-1 space makes seed stitch.  The ch-1 before and after corners is at the beginning of the repeat, just after the "*".  The only ch-2 space in the rounds is in the last round of the motif.

They come out beautiful.  My only change was to make the puff sts (I know, the whole point!) into 3-dc clusters as puff stitch and I don't see eye to eye.  I'm doing seven with the motifs in varying shades of blue and the body of the washcloth in pure white as part of a daily bath set for my best friend's birthday.
