Maridon's Favorites

Located in Southern Illinois. I am a beginner crocheter. I want to make filet patterns for edgings on hankerchiefs and bookmarkers. I have a hard time understanding a pattern that says go into chain ir stitch. How do I know when to stitch in space (?)
